UPN TEAM CHALLENGE
Getting in the Swing with UPN!

Farsley Transport, the winning UPN depot
More than 60 people met at Stapleford Park in Leicestershire, to compete in the UPN Team Challenge, with teams from depots, the hub and also from a number of business partners and associates.

The event, which was held for the first time at this prestigious golfing venue, saw players competing for a number of individual and team events, including the nearest the pin and the longest drive.

The event was organised by UPN to encourage teamwork, reward the effort that depots and staff have made over the last six months, whilst raising funds for The Childrens’ Society.

Event organiser, Angela Sparling, explains, “We have many depots that enjoy playing golf and we thought it would be a great idea to bring them all together to enjoy a day of fun with work colleagues and fellow UPN members. The weather was tremendous and we all enjoyed ourselves and raised money to support a worthy cause, through a raffle and through event sponsorship.

Our members and our staff work very hard, so it is great for them to be able to have a break and enjoy a relaxing day in the countryside. Our thanks go out to all those who attended and also to those that sponsored the event.”

The main sponsor for the day was Deker Trailers. The winning depot was Farsleys Transport (UPN depot 44), who also won a trophy for the longest drive.

UPN PARTNERSHIP EXPANDS EUROPEAN OFFERING

UPN has launched a range of new European services, following the
announcement of a new partnership with Signet International,
covering 12 European countries.

The new partnership allows UPN depots to cost effectively transport palletised freight to France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland. It is expected that the partnership will see further countries in Europe added to the UPN network in coming months.

David Brown, UPN Commercial Director, explains, “Europe continues to grow in importance and we are delighted to be working with Signet.

L-R David Brown & Richard Newport

It has a well proven track record and has a real focus on service, just like UPN. Our reputation has been built on quality and it is vital that our partners are able to help us maintain our reputation. This offering allows us to step ahead of other pallet networks who do not offer the same levels of coverage. We have seen significant business growth over the last year and by continually finding new ways to add value we are confident that we can maintain the same levels of growth through 2008.”

Richard Newport, Managing Director at Signet, adds, “We have worked with pallet networks in the past and UPN’s focus on quality does help to set it apart from the rest. We have now been trading for nearly 25 years and have been working across Europe since 1992. I have met with many of the UPN depots already and I look forward to working closely with them in the future.”

UPN strengthens the board and announces four new depots

UPN, a leading pallet network operator has announced the opening of four new UK depots, together with the appointment of Glenn Boldy as Network Service Director, following increased market demand after the launch of its real-time IT system.

GLENN BOLDY, NETWORK SERVICE DIRECTOR

Our approach has been different. I believe that our focus on service and technology to continually improve quality to customers and drive improved efficiency at depot level, we would secure sustainable growth, whatever market conditions.

I am delighted to report that this strategy has proven to be a good one over the long term. Our investment in implementing a real-time signature capture system has been well received in the market and is helping us to attract many new hauliers to UPN. We have added nearly 100 years of experience to our central management team over the last twelve months and Glenn has been working with us as a consultant for the last few months. His levels of experience in the logistics market are second to none and we are delighted he has decided to join the board.”

Glenn’s role will involve him working closely with all UPN depots in the UK, to ensure that they continually improve service levels and efficiency. He has been working closely with UPN over recent months to help it roll out its new real-time XDA based signature capture system. This allows customers to be able to view an electronic signature on the central UPN website within seconds of delivery, wherever the pallet is being sent in the UK.

The solution was developed in-house by UPN, working with development tools from Microsoft, utilising the latest .NET framework and standard XDAs.

Glenn explains his decision to join UPN:

“I have worked in the logistics sector for many years and have been involved in setting up, developing and selling haulage companies in the past. The palletised freight sector has seen high levels of growth over the last decade. My role is to ensure that UPN and its depots continue to exploit new ways of delivering services that will enable UPN to continue to stand apart from the crowd. I have spent the last few months helping the business implement a new real time signature capture system. The business is looking to open around 20 more depots over the next two years as freight throughput increases. There are some great new services coming along the pipeline and UPN has a fantastic story to tell. I am delighted to join the board.”

At the same time, UPN has also announced the opening of four new UK depots, as follows:

Brian Gibbons Transport (BGT) has joined UPN from another pallet network. Brian Gibbons, Managing Director at BGT explains, “We established our business in 1988 and have grown successfully on the back of good service, now operating 40 vehicles and nearly 100,000 sq foot of warehousing. We have worked with other pallet networks in the past, but have been amazed at the quality of the UPN network. Its leading edge IT solutions allow us to deliver much better service and I am confident that we have picked the right partner.”

Pallet Route Solutions has joined the UPN network, providing service to clients in the Lincoln area, having worked with another pallet network in the past.

T & R Phillips has joined the UPN network to provide pallet collection and delivery services to companies in the SA, CF and NP postcode areas, managed by its two offices in Swansea and Cardiff. Ian Phillips, General Manager, explains. “We have worked with palletised networks in the past and are totally familiar with the concept. Following a review of our business, we decided to look again at the market and assess our situation. We felt that UPN stood out against the rest because of its focus on quality and the way that it uses IT to help make life easier for us and our customers.” T&R Phillips was established in 1938 and provides complete transport and warehousing solutions across both sites. The business also offers a complete range of commercial vehicle repair services from Swansea.

CJ Edwards has joined the UPN network to provide service to clients in the London area, south of the M4.

About UPN

UPN operates a purpose built hub in Leicestershire and has access to over 5,000 vehicles and two million square feet of flexible warehousing across its UK network, together with a range of European logistics services. UPN opens new markets with launch of Micro Pallet service

UPN has launched a new level of service for the UK market, to help bridge the gap between parcel and palletised freight sectors.

The new Micro Pallet service is available from more than 60 national UPN depots from the 1st May 2007, and will open up a number of new market opportunities for UPN and its members.

Martyn Chapman, Chairman at UPN, explains:

“Over recent years, we have seen solid growth in the traditional palletised freight sector, and more customers now realise the

MARTYN CHAPMAN, CHAIRMAN

value that a network can deliver to both members and customers. Growth in online trading and the use of systems like eBay has opened the doors to a potentially huge market for smaller consignments of palletised freight. These heavy multi-part consignments have been identified as “profit stealers” by the parcel industry where suppliers tend to price themselves out of the market by imposing premium pricing to drive customers away. The UPN solution is the Micro Pallet concept and it delivers a much more cost effective solution. This effectively bridges a gap in the market and we think demand will grow quickly.”

The new service from UPN allows customers to ship pallets of up to 150 kilos anywhere in the UK on a next day or timed service for around 25 per cent less than the cost of a full sized pallet. Users of the new service can ship their freight on standard 1.2m by 0.8m pallets, with a height of up to 0.6 metres.

Customers will be provided with the same high quality service provided by the UPN network. Earlier in 2007, UPN also announced the implementation of a real time signature capture system, using the latest hand held XDA technology. This is provided as standard with the micro pallet service, giving users access to the kinds of service levels that used to be the preserve of the parcel market. They will be able to move into new markets, with improved customer service levels and considerable reductions in the cost of logistics.
